Mini-entrevista a Lance Virgile (OLB Wake Forest)

Después de mucho tiempo sin subir entrevistas volvemos a subir una de ellas que teníamos  desde hace ya un tiempo. Os traemos la entrevista de Lance Virgile, nuevo Outside Linebacker de los Demon Deacons de Wake Forest. La prensa especializada le ve con un gran "placador", muy capaz de parar el juego de carrera rival. Virgile llega a Wake Forest desde St. Thomas Aquinas HS (Florida), instituto que este año aporta jugadores a programas de football como los de Ohio State, Bowling Green, UConn, Houston, FAU, Illinois, Cincinnati... De este instituto han salido jugadores como el primer RB seleccionado en el reciente NFL Draft 2013, Giovani Bernard (North Carolina).

Tanto Rivals como 247Sports lo ven como un recluta de 3 estrellas, siendo el OLB nº53 de la nación según Rivals. En cambio ESPN le ve como un jugador de 4 estrellas, otorgándole el puesto 25 de mejores OLB de esta clase 2013. Entre otras ofertas, Virgile fue tentado por programas como los de Louisville, Bowling Green, Houston, Florida International, East Carolina, Miami (OH), Louisiana-Lafayette, North Carolina State, UCF, West Virginia...

Vayamos con la entrevista:

Why did you choose Wake Forest over West Virginia, North Carolina St, Houston, UCF, Louisville…?

LV: I had many different offers but I chose Wake because it presented the best academic to athletic ratio for me. I want to have the most even school for both because I need something to do after football as far as jobwise.

Did you enjoy having many Colleges trying to recruit you?

LV: I did but after a while it became stressful trying to figure out which college to go to. It's a blessing but at times it turned into something that restrained my sleep.

What do you expect of your first college football year?

LV: Truth be told I have no idea what to expect. All I know is that this is the biggest transition in my life.

Did you see yourself at NFL? Is there any special NFL team for you?

LV: I see myself being something in life. If it is the NFL than that is the greatest thing I can ever ask for. The special team for me is the one willing to pay me for my talents.

Wake Forest is a BIG team, Do you feel under pressure?

LV: Pressure makes diamonds. The most pressure I feel, if from anywhere, is from myself. I plan on making something positive out this pressure.

Can you say us what player would you like to be like? (into NFL)

LV: I want to a mix of Ray Lewis' intelligence and work ethic and Clay Mathews' savage mentality and speed.

Do you see Wake Forest fighting for the big bowls the next season?

LV: I see where ever I would have went to school fighting for a bowl. I always plan to contribute on helping the team I am on to get as far as possible.

What is the most important game of the 2013 season? (for Wake Forest)

LV: For Wake Forest it's a fight between NC State and FSU. For me, it's Miami. I get to come back home. I live 2 minutes from Sun Life Stadium.

Who was for you the best 2012 player into NCAA? And best player in Wake Forest?

LV: One of the best players in the NCAA last year to me was Tavon Austin. He was a freak athlete for WVU. At Wake Forest, I would say Michael Campanaro just because when I was on my visit there he had a great game and tied an ACC record.

According to Rivals you are the OLB # 53, do you agree?

LV: I don't pay attention to rating sites to tell you the truth. Stars and rating mean absolutely nothing in high school.

Do you see yourself winning a Heisman Trophy? Can a defensive player win it?

LV: It is ridiculously hard for a defensive player to win it but it isn't impossible. So yes, if I work to be a Heisman winner I will get it.

Do you think that a college player should be able to earn money for their play?

LV: The part of me who wants money says of course. The football part of me says no. Not being played makes you hungry to get paid. If college players got payed I don't know if they would work as hard. However, I can say we should get paid but not in the extraordinary amounts NFL players get paid. A little pocket cash won't hurt.

Who is for you the most important person in football?

LV: Ray Lewis has always been and will always be my favorite football player. I grew up a Miami fan. After his retirement, I've been growing to be a Clay Mathews fan.

What is your favorite football movie?

LV: Friday Night Lights.

Do you know anything of Spain? What?

LV: Not much really but I do have some decent Spanish speaking skills.

Can you say us (Spanish Fans) how are the spring practices?

LV: I'm not on campus yet so I can't do spring practices. My workouts have been going really well though. I went from 200 in the end of the season to about 227 now.

Do you prefer 4-3 or 3-4 defense? Why?

LV: 3-4 is an outside linebackers dream. Its made for us to make plays.

Bonus question) How is the life, day by day, of a high school player?

LV: During football season, it's a grind.Off-season is still a grind if you make it that way and it's been a grind for me.

¿Por qué escogiste Wake Forest sobre West Virginia, North Carolina St, Houston, UCF, Louisville…?

LV: Tuve muchas ofertas distintas pero escogí Wake porque me mostró el mejor ratio académico-atlético para mí. Me gustaría tener la universidad más equitativa para ambas cosas porque necesito hacer algo después del football en cuanto a capacidad laboral.

¿Disfrutaste teniendo muchos programas tratando de reclutarte?

LV: Lo hice, pero después de un tiempo se convirtió estresante tratar de pensar a qué universidad ir. Es una bendición, pero a veces era algo que me quitaba el sueño.

¿Qué esperas de tu primer año de College Football?

LV: La verdad es que no tengo ni idea de qué esperar. Todo lo que sé es que este es el mayor paso en mi vida.

¿Te ves en la NFL? ¿Hay algún equipo especial en la NFL para ti?

LV: Me veo a mí mismo siendo algo en la vida. Si se trata de la NFL, es lo más grande que puedo pedir. El equipo especial para mí será el que esté dispuesto a pagar por mi talento.

Wake Forest es un gran equipo, ¿Te ves bajo presión?

LV: La presión hace diamantes. La mayor presión que siento es de mí mismo. Planeo sacar algo positivo de esta presión.

¿Puedes decirnos como qué jugador te gustaría ser? (dentro de la NFL)

LV: Me gustaría tener una mezcla entre la inteligencia y la ética de trabajo de Ray Lewis y la mentalidad salvaje y rapidez de Clay Mathews.

¿Ves a Wake Forest peleando por las grandes bowls la próxima temporada?

LV: Veo cualquier sitio al que yo habría ido peleando por una bowl. Siempre intento echar una mano ayudando al equipo en el que estoy tanto como sea posible.

¿Cuál es el partido más importante de la próxima temporada? (para Wake Forest)

LV: Para Wake Forest es una lucha entre NC State y FSU. Para mí, es Miami. Tengo la oportunidad de volver a casa. Vivo a 2 minutos del Sun Life Stadium.

¿Quién fue para ti el mejor jugador en el 2012 de la NCAA? ¿Y el mejor en Wake Forest?

LV: Uno de los mejores jugadores de la NCAA el año pasado para mí fue Tavon Austin. Era un deportista extraordinario de WVU. En Wake Forest, diría que Michael Campanaro sólo porque cuando yo estaba en mi visita allí tuvo un gran partido e igualó un récord de la ACC.

De acuerdo con Rivals eres el OLB # 53, ¿estás de acuerdo?

LV: No presto atención a los sitios de rankings si te digo la verdad. Las estrellas y los rankings no significan absolutamente nada en el instituto.

¿Te ves ganando un Heisman Trophy? ¿Puede ganarlo un defensa?

LV: Es ridículamente difícil para un jugador defensivo ganarlo, pero no es imposible. Así que sí, si trabajo para ser un ganador del Heisman lo conseguiré.

¿Crees que un jugador del college debería poder ganar dinero por jugar?

LV: La parte de mí que quiere dinero dice que por supuesto. La parte del football dice que no. Que no te paguen hace que estés deseoso de que sí lo hagan. Si a los jugadores del college football les pagaran no sé si se esforzarían tanto. Sin embargo, puedo decir que deberiamos cobrar pero no las cantidades desorbitadas que cobran los jugadores de la NFL. Un poco de dinero en el bolsillo no vendría mal.

¿Cual es para ti la persona más importante del football?

LV: Ray Lewis siempre ha sido y siempre será mi jugador favorito del football. Crecí como un fan de Miami. Después de su retiro, me he ido haciendo fan de Clay Mathews.

¿Cuál es tu película de football preferida?

LV: Friday Night Lights.

¿Sabes algo de España? ¿Qué?

LV: No mucho en realidad, pero tengo algunas habilidades de habla española decentes.

¿Puedes decirnos cómo son las spring practices?

LV: No estoy en el campus todavía, así que no puedo hacer las prácticas de primavera. Sin embargo mis entrenamientos han ido muy bien. Pasé de las 200 (libras) del final de la temporada a unas 227 ahora.

LV: Durante la temporada de football, es un agobio. En la off-seasonsigue siendo un agobio si haces que sea así y para mí lo está siendo.
